It’s sort of reborn for this moment because of all the associations it had originally. People have come up to me also and have expressed the same opinion that this work seems to speak again to the times right now, the present time. We can’t seem to avoid that every so often in our history. A selection of Crumb’s early music rounds out the picture of this essential American artist’s lengthy career.

It’s not uniformly black, but the prevailing sense is probably very much that. We get ourselves into these awful, abysmal messes. The Daedalus Quartet performs Crumb’s Vietnam War-haunted Black Angels for amplified string quartet, a work of frightening intensity, where Jimi Hendrix and Pierrot Lunaire shake hands with the devil. As black as things are, there is a progression from the dark to the light over the course of the work, even though the final page again has a flashback to the hysterical music of the opening page. I heard the piece played several times just in the last year and a half and I kind of shudder that things move in cycles. Hailing from Austin, Texas, the band is comprised of Alex Maas, Christian Bland, Kyle Hunt, Stephanie Bailey and Jake Garcia. It’s surprisingly reminiscent of so many things that worried us about the Vietnam time. The sultry neo-psychedelic sound of the Black Angels came together in spring 2004, taking their name from a Velvet Underground classic, The Black Angel’s Death Song. We’re heading right into a very dark period for America. I think that when I hear this piece played in very recent times, I’m struck with the haunting sense that here we go again. By the time I finished writing the whole piece, in token of this recognition of its character and identifying with that very dark time, I inscribed the work “In Time of War” using the model of Joseph Haydn‘s Mass In Time of War. And there were dark currents operating and those things were somehow finding their way into the conception of the string quartet. But what is more real the actual, specific examples, or the big picture Transposed into a musical composition we might think of sonata form as being essentially hierarchical in a similar way. But very soon after I got into the sketching process, I became aware that the musical ideas were picking up vibrations from the surrounding world, which was the world of the Vietnam time. The notion being that the individual examples are subsidiary or generally less important than the big picture. At the outset, I wasn’t planning anything like a political statement I was just writing a piece of music. I had not worked in that medium since my student days. Crumb describes dark currents and musical vibrations from the surrounding world of the Vietnam War as crucial to shaping Black Angels.Beyond its unearthly sound palette, Crumb’s work depicts the horrors of war through spiritual symbols that permeate the work, from its architecture to foundational motives. The project started with a simple commission from the University of Michigan for the Stanley Quartet, so I was first of all faced with the task of coming up with a string quartet. LISTEN to an excerpt from Crumb’s Black Angels As black as things are, there is a progression from the dark to the light over the course of the work, even though the final page again has a flashback to the hysterical music of the opening page. But that's just me.I think that Black Angels should inspire a sense of terror although, toward the end, I introduce a note of optimism. But if you just sit back and enjoy it, not worry about how "lame" something might seem, you might actually find something quite satisfying to watch. If you look for things to complain about, you'll find them. Find the latest tracks, albums, and images from Crumb, George - Black Angels. Of course Jessica Alba as Max is a great reason to watch this series, but so is Jensan Ackles. Sure there are many "cliche'" scenes and some "bad acting," but over all, for me at least, it was a very enjoyable escape into a world of unending possibilities. However, I really enjoyed the series! I only wish it had survived at least 2 maybe 3 more seasons. I agree with the many of you that there were things that could have been done better.
